Diffindo is a charm, used to make precise, accurate cuts. At the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry it is taught during the second and fourth year classes. If used against another person, the charm is able to cause injury or death. The charm can be learned from The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1.
The Severing Charm was created by the seamstress and witch Delfina Crimp during the fifteenth century. Crimp stated the reason she invented the new spell was that previous cutting spells tended to either shred or burn the item.
Diffindo is Latin for “to splitm cleave, or open.”
