Astronomy History

Astronomy is one of the few classes at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in which the use of spells and practical magic is not used during lessons, and is the only class which has a directly corresponding course in the Muggle world. Students of Astronomy learn the names of stars, constellations, and planets, and also learn to track their movements and locations, as well as describing the environmental conditions on other planets and moons. At Hogwarts, Astronomy is a required course from Year 1 until Year 5, after which students take their Ordinary Wizarding Level examinations, consisting of a blank star chart which must then be completed by the student. Upon passing their Ordinary Wizarding Level exam, they are permitted to advance to the Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test level courses if they so choose.

Astronomy Etymology

From the Greek word “astronomia”, which itself is a combination of two words, “astron” and “nomos,” meaning star, and law respectively.
