Peter Pettigrew Biography & History
Peter Pettigrew, better known by his nickname Wormtail, was born into the wizarding world and attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he was sorted into Gryffindor House. Despite the bravery typically associated with Gryffindor, Pettigrew’s actions throughout his life displayed cowardice and self-preservation at the expense of others’ safety.
During his time at Hogwarts, Pettigrew became friends with James Potter, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin, collectively known as the Marauders. He was the least conspicuous of the group, often overshadowed by the talents and personalities of his friends. Unknown to many, Pettigrew became an Animagus, able to transform into a rat, which later facilitated his betrayal and escape from justice.
Pettigrew betrayed James and Lily Potter to Lord Voldemort, directly leading to their deaths. He then framed Sirius Black for the crime, leading to Black’s unjust imprisonment in Azkaban. Pettigrew spent the following twelve years hiding in his Animagus form as the Weasley family’s pet rat, Scabbers.
His true identity was revealed in Harry Potter’s third year at Hogwarts, after which Pettigrew returned to serve Lord Voldemort, playing a crucial role in his resurgence. Pettigrew met his end during the Battle of Hogwarts, when the magical hand given to him by Voldemort turned on him after he hesitated upon being reminded of a life debt he owed to Harry Potter.
