Come and Go Room History
It is likely that many people have found this room, but were unaware of exactly what they had found. One assumed instance of a person finding the Come and Go Room was when Albus Dumbledore was in great need of a restroom, he came across a room full of chamberpots, but was unable to find it again. Other known users include Dobby the house-elf, who used the room to treat Winky the house-elf when she had gotten drunk off Butterbeer, Argus Filch, who found extra cleaning supplies, and Fred and George Weasley, who found a place to hide when running from Filch. Three significant groups later understood how the room worked, and were able to find the room consistently. First, Dumbledore’s Army headquartered in the room in 1995-1996 to practice Defense Against the Dark Arts, as their teacher that year, Dolores Umbridge, refused to teach the students any practical applications of the subject, the room provided Dark Detectors, as well as several books that were useful in their learning. Dumbledore’s Army was eventually found by the Inquisitorial Squad, as they needed to find evidence the group was breaking school rules. Second, in 1996-1997, Draco Malfoy used the room that was possibly the most used form of the Come and Go Room, the Room of Hidden Things, where students in need of hiding something would find themselves, the room was filled with all matter of objects hidden throughout the years. Malfoy used the room to to repair a Vanishing Cabinet which was then used to allow Death Eaters to enter Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry without being noticed. Finally, in 1997-1998 at the height of the Second Wizarding War, several students used the room to hide from the Death Eater professors, the Carrows. One of the requirements Neville Longbottom requested from the room was that the room be unable to be found by the Carrows, which kept those inside the room safe from their wrath. The room also created a passage into the Hog’s Head pub as a way for students to obtain sustenance, since the room could not magically create food, as that was one of the Principal Exceptions to Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration. This passage also allowed members of the Order of the Phoenix to enter the school grounds to help in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Come and Go Room Etymology

The name Come and Go Room came from the room’s tendency to appear and vanish without a trace to those who do not know how the room works.
