Tom Riddle’s diary was initially blank, allowing him to interact with the person writing in it. Originally a school diary from the year 1943, it had the power to respond intelligently to anything written inside, functioning as a communication tool between the diary’s version of Tom Riddle and its user. This enchanted property of the diary enabled it to manipulate and possess the writer.

The primary purpose of Tom Riddle’s diary was to reopen the Chamber of Secrets and purge Hogwarts of Muggle-borns. Riddle had enchanted the diary to ensure his sixteen-year-old self’s memory would continue his mission of purifying the school. Additionally, it served as one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, containing a fragment of his soul, ensuring his immortality.

Ginny Weasley received Tom Riddle’s diary from Lucius Malfoy, who discreetly slipped it into her second-hand books at Diagon Alley. Lucius Malfoy, intending to discredit Arthur Weasley and cause chaos at Hogwarts, believed the diary would help achieve both objectives, being unaware of its status as a Horcrux.

Tom Riddle’s diary was destroyed by Harry Potter using a basilisk fang. During the climax in the Chamber of Secrets, Harry stabbed the diary with the venomous fang, which had the potent ability to destroy Horcruxes. This action eradicated the fragment of Voldemort’s soul inside and rendered the diary powerless.
